Trail Description | trails_description | text | Trail description | The Montour Trail is a multi-use rail trail that follows a sweeping arc through the suburbs of Washington and Allegheny Counties, southwest of Pittsburgh. It is also the longest suburban rail-trail in the United States. The 46-mile mainline is nearly complete, and extends from Coraopolis on the Ohio River to Clairton on the Monongahela River. The Montour Trail connects the nationally prominent Great Allegheny Passage, a trail route extending from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. – with many suburban Pittsburgh municipalities, as well as the Pittsburgh International Airport. The trail’s soft, crushed limestone surface makes it ideal for multiple forms of non-motorized use, such as biking, walking, and cross-country skiing. There are also numerous trailheads along the trail. In addition to parking, many of these also provide restrooms and water fountains. Built primarily on former Montour and Pennsylvania Railroad rights-of-way, it provides an unusually flat pathway amidst southwestern Pennsylvania’s hilly topography. This scenic greenway provides picturesque natural landscapes, waterways and wetlands, views of historic railroad bridges and tunnels, as well as numerous fishing opportunities along the various waterways. Now the longest rail-trail east of the Mississippi River, the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage spans two states in its course along majestic rivers and across mountain passes. Running from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Cumberland, Md., the Great Allegheny Passage trail traces the paths of railroads that helped build America. The Great Allegheny Passage begins in the industrial suburb of McKeesport and continues some 70 miles to the Eastern Continental Divide. At this point, it follows the route of the old Western Maryland Railroad. You will cross the continental divide just before reaching the Maryland state line. From this elevation, more than 2,300 feet, it’s all downhill to Cumberland. You will pass through the ½ mile long Big Savage tunnel just beyond the divide. The trail continues for 22 more miles to ends in Cumberland. At this point, the trail connects to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park towpath, which takes you another 184 miles to Washington, D.C., without ever leaving a trail. A National Recreation Trail, the Ghost Town Trail is named for the numerous old mining towns along the corridor that were served by the Ebenburg & Backlick Railroad and Cambria & Indiana Railroad. The trail winds though the scenic Blacklick Creek watershed, passing interpretive signs and historical artifacts including mining slag, railroad ties, and discarded rail cars. Just west of Vintondale is Eliza Furnace, one of Pennsylvania’s best-preserved iron blast furnaces. You’re likely to encounter deer and chipmunks in the morning. Once the sun gets high, watch for the occasional snake on the warm pathway. Portions of the trail run though game lands; wear blaze orange during hunting season. At Saylor Park in Black Lick there are signs directing trail users to the Hoodlebug Trail. The Butler-Freeport Community Trail is about an hour northeast of the City of Pittsburgh. The 16-mile rail-trail on the corridor, open since 1989, is nestled in the scenic wooded valley that follows Little Buffalo Creek to Buffalo Creek and on to the Allegheny River at Freeport. The trail is flat and easy to ride. Heading north from Freeport, you’ll be on a slight incline. The trail surface moves from crushed stone to dirt to asphalt. Remains of old stone quarries and brick kilns can be seen in the southern section of the trail. Heading north from Cabot, the results of late 1800 development are still visible. The former Saxon City Hotel, built in 1871, remains, as does an old, still active, lumberyard. Circut trail passing throughout a natural growth meadow view top 100 |

phmc_markertext | phmc_markertext | text | Founded 1681 by William Penn as a Quaker Commonwealth. Birthplace of THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES. Founded in 1751 as the seat of Cumberland County. Historic old frontier town. Supplied a contingent for the first regiment of the Continental Army in 1775. March against the Whiskey Rebels began here, 1794. Pennsylvania's capital since 1812. As Harris' Ferry, was settled a century before by John Harris Sr. Laid out as a town in 1785 by John Harris Jr. For over 200 years a center of travel, trade, and historic events. Along the streams of this region are ruins of many charcoal iron furnaces and forges built between 1790-1850. Juniata iron was the best in America. Its reign ended with the rise of coal and coke iron making. Laid out 1770 by a group of Connecticut settlers, on land claimed by that state. Seat of "County of Westmoreland," erected 1776. Near here took place the Wyoming Massacre, 1778, and the "Pennamite Wars" of 1769-72 and 1784. view top 100 | |
