Investigations occur after a thorough inquiry into a referral determines there are reasonable grounds to believe a resident has been abused, or is likely to be abused. Founded Cases is the number of cases where the investigation determined there were probable grounds abuse occurred. The Protection for Persons in Care Act is an extra safeguard for patients or residents 16 years of age or older receiving care from Nova Scotia’s hospitals, residential care facilities, nursing homes, homes for the aged or disabled persons under the Homes for Special Care Act."

Municipal Financial Capacity and Town Foundation Grants

In addition, towns are provided with a $50,000 Town Foundation Grant as recognition of the particular challenges they face due to local road responsibilities and assessment bases. Prior to 2019, the Municipal Financial Capacity Grant was called 'Equalization Grant'. The Municipial Grants Act (S.8, s.19A) provides for the payment of the Municipal Financial Capacity Grant and the Town Foundation Grant, which are in the form of unconditional transfers.

This dataset provides financial information such as the gross expenditures on Nova Scotia Corrections; the per capita expenditures on Nova Scotia Corrections, which is calculated using the total population in Nova Scotia; and the average daily cost in adult custody in Nova Scotia, which is calculated using the adult offender population in adult facilities. Fluctuations in the cost of Corrections may be driven by a number of factors, including but not limited to: the level of crime, legislative and policy responses to crime, sentencing practices, and administrative changes relating to organizational structure and the delivery of services, as well as changes in salaries and benefits for staff. The source for the financial information is the Nova Scotia Department of Justice, Financial Services Corporate Service Unit (CSU). Population data is sourced from Statistics Canada CANSIM Table 051-0005 - Estimates of population, Canada, provinces and territories.

Crime Statistics - Crime Severity Index

It is based on police reported incidents of crime reported through the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR). Statistics include the crime severity index, violent crime severity index, and non-violent crime severity index overall for provincial and police service levels. The Youth Crime Severity Index is based on the same principles as the overall Crime Severity Index, which reflects the seriousness of offences, but uses the number of youths accused instead of an incident count. Statistics included are: youth crime severity index, youth violent crime severity index and youth non-violent crime severity index for provincial level data only. This data is sourced from Statistics Canada through CANSIM.

Average Daily Counts at Adult and Youth Correctional Facilities
data.novascotia.ca | Last Updated 2021-06-22T14:12:12.000ZAverage daily count statistics of adults and youth in custody are derived from daily count statistics of adults and youth incarcerated in adult or youth correctional facilities in Nova Scotia. The average daily count is submitted to Statistics Canada and data is published for the provinces and territories on an annual basis through their Key Indicators Report (KIR) survey and CANSIM. Due to the time lag in publishing the data by Statistics Canada, however, data for the most recent year is provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.
